Ft Myers Independent Living: 4 of our Favorite Ways to Stay Active

Ft. Myers Independent Living: 4 of our Favorite Ways to Stay Active

Mixed pickleball teams congratulate each other after a match at a ft myers independent living community

Physical activity is essential for people of all ages. However, as we age, it is important to find ways to get active that fit your current health requirements. Before starting any physical activity, it is best to consult your doctor and get some key tips/restrictions that are customized for your unique needs. Once you have consulted your doctor and get approval to workout take a look at 4 of our favorite ways to stay active in a Ft Myers Independent Living community like Cypress Cove.

  1. Balance.

    • Doing simple balance activities may seem silly at first but are very important for helping reduce falls and to help you achieve your workout goals. There are a variety of ways to improve your balance.
      • Cypress Cove will have a variety of activities available for their residents where you can stay in shape and make new friends.
      • Silver Sneakers has a variety of online and in-person classes for you to pick from.
      • Sign up for a tai chi or yoga class that is catered toward seniors.
  2. Strengthening Your Muscles.

    • It is important to focus on your muscles 2 days a week. It does not matter which days, as long as you can fit them into your schedule at least 2 times. What are some of the ways we keep our muscles strong at Ft Myers Independent Living?
      • It can be as simple as lifting some light weights or water bottles up and down while watching your favorite shows.
      • Playing the drums, shuffleboard, pickleball, or other outdoor games.
      • Physical Training sessions so they can help you focus on specific muscles and make sure that you are doing it safely.
  3. Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Activities.

    • These do not have to be done daily. Start out slow even 5 minutes can begin to positively impact your health. Then over time build it up to around 2 hours and 30 minutes a week (or whatever your doctor says is needed).
      • Zumba or dance classes can be a fun way to get your heart beating.
      • Going for a swim or a water aerobics class is a refreshing way to stay healthy.
      • Speed walking with some friends.
      • Even some household chores can get your heart beating.
  4. Stretching.

    • It is important to do some light daily stretches that are approved by your doctors. Even if it is as simple as some chair stretches while watching a movie or listening to your favorite album.

Staying active is key to aging healthy, however, making sure you are in contact with your physicians and are following their guidelines is the most important thing you can do. If you overdo it or do a class that is not within your suggested limits then you can cause more harm than good.
