While we would love for all our scholarship recipients to work at Cypress Cove forever, we understand that their career goals may take them away from senior living. We recently caught up with Travis Whiddon, geotechnical engineer at Universal Engineering Sciences, to see how he is doing.
Travis worked at Cypress Cove full time as a cook from September 2014 to September 2021 while earning a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Florida Gulf Coast University. He utilized both the tuition assistance and scholarship programs to help pay for college courses. “The programs helped a great amount by taking the stress off of paying for classes,” Travis said.
During his time at Cypress Cove, Travis enjoyed the work environment, getting to know the residents, and becoming great friends with many of his co-workers. He noted that his supervisor was extremely flexible and understanding of his class schedule.
One of his favorite memories was working the omelet station and watching how excited the residents would get when he flipped an omelet. “I was able to connect with the residents and do my best to make their day better,” he recalled.
When asked if he would recommend Cypress Cove to other students, Travis said “Cypress Cove is a great place to grow and develop as a worker while still being able to achieve the dream of going to college with help financially.”
Thank you, Travis! We wish you all the best in your new career!
